Haiku Friday: Forget The Diet

I can’t hide from it –
stalking me in every aisle
at the grocery

Halloween candy
of every kind calls with a
loud, sweet siren song

Sure, it’s for the kids
but who can resist bags of
mini Reese’s cups?

I love dressing up for Halloween, but I think I love the candy even more. It’s so unfair that grocery stores put up an entire aisle of Halloween candy (and displays at the end of every other aisle) at the beginning of October.

If I want any chance of not gaining 5 pounds this month, and want to actually give the candy I buy away to neighborhood kids, I’ll have to hold off on buying the jumbo bags of pixie sticks, fun-size Snickers and Sweet Tarts until two hours before trick-or-treat.

Haiku Friday: Stop the Ads!

I’m already sick
of campaign ads on TV
every five minutes

One more month to go
of attacks and one-sided
tales to influence

The one benefit
of these ads is I am now
watching less TV

Don’t get me wrong – I’m excited about this election and hope everyone votes, but if I have to watch another month of slanted, mud-slinging campaign ads, I think I might become a fan of anarchy. I’ve turned off the TV more than once this week just because I was sick of seeing the campaign ads during commercials.

Haiku Friday: Simple Pleasures

An unexpected
surprise tonight, hidden in
a closet corner

One final box of
Thin Mint Girl Scout cookies I
forgot months ago

The perfect hiding
spot, and now the perfect snack:
chocolatey goodness

I was searching the house tonight for something chocolate to snack on while watching TV (Grey’s Anatomy premiere, anyone?), when I remembered that at one time I stashed a bunch of Girl Scout cookies in the hall closet. I peeked in there, moving a few things aside, and there it was: the lone box of Thin Mints. I think this is the longest a box of Thin Mints has lasted in my house.

And they were delicious.

Haiku Friday: Signs Of Age

What do I see here?
A flash of white on my head
Surrounded by brown

But wait -now I see
another one! White hairs are
sprouting everywhere.

When did I become
old enough to have more white
hairs than I can pluck?

Or maybe it’s not
the years, but the wear – I can
blame my children, right?

Maybe it’s not fair to completely blame my kids for the white hairs scattered around my temples. So I’ll only give them partial blame, but then add a little blame for my wrinkles on them, too. Better than admitting I’m getting old, right?
