(Some) Government Agencies Suck

We’re *this* close to having insurance for Cordy and Mira. Since Aaron lost his job, we knew it was a possibility we’d run out of insurance before he could find a new one. At first, we hoped that something would appear before the end of July – how naive we were. That whole plan to bring jobs to Ohio isn’t exactly working as quickly as we’d like.

At the end of July, we realized there was no immediate job offer coming, so we applied for state assistance for health insurance for the kids. The SCHIP program has helped so many people, and while I’ve always been a supporter, I never imagined we’d have to take advantage of it. With only our freelance income, we easily qualify for it. The paperwork was submitted, all documentation was submitted and approved, and everything should be in place for my two young daughters to have health insurance to protect them if anything would happen.

I said should be in place, because as of yet it isn’t. We still have one obstacle in our way:

Now, I have never bought into the stereotype of the lazy government worker. Especially since my husband was just recently a government worker, and would have been fired quickly for poor customer service in his agency. I had the belief that people who worked in government jobs did so because of their desire to help others and make a difference.

Yeah, I know. You can really stop laughing now.

Our case worker has so far been slow and unable to keep his word. Everything was submitted and in order as of the beginning of August for their health insurance. There was some question as to if we might qualify for additional help, so he said he would be in touch with us either the next Monday, or if not then, the Monday morning after that for sure. (He was going on vacation after the first Monday.)

We waited but there was no call the first Monday. We knew it was a possibility, so we crossed our fingers and hoped no one got sick that week. The second Monday morning, there was no call. By late afternoon, Aaron called the agency, and was told they would give him the message that he called, and his case worker would respond within 24 hours.

Somehow I expected a call within 24 hours. But there was no call on Tuesday. On Wednesday afternoon, nearly 2 days after Aaron called, the case worker called back, telling us he didn’t have a chance to do anything yet, but would have everything finalized by the next day. We were told he would call us back “tomorrow before 1pm.” (Thursday)

You can probably guess what happened next. There was no call on Thursday. Or Friday.

So yesterday Aaron called again first thing in the morning, and was again informed that his case worker would be back in touch within 24 hours. No call. He called again today, got the same message.

At this point, it’s been nearly a month since our children were approved for health insurance, but so far no confirmation has been made to get them enrolled.

I’m only glad this guy is dealing with Aaron and not me. I consider myself a patient person, but not where my children’s health is concerned. I’m feeling very mama bear right now, and I would likely have some choice words for him about doing what you say you will do and how damn hard is it to make a 5 minute phone call, asshole? This is about health coverage for kids!

When I worked as a student advisor, there were days when I was busy and had several phone messages waiting for me. If I wasn’t in the office the next day (I worked part-time) I’d stay the extra 5-10 minutes it took to make sure I got back to everyone, even if it was just to acknowledge their call and let them know I was looking into their question and when to expect a response.

I’d be more OK with this situation if there was a hold-up somewhere and he could take the time to let us know what the delay is. Instead, we’re left calling daily with no return call or information about when or if our girls will have health insurance. How can an agency that is dedicated to helping families in a time of need be so far off it’s goal? It seems that when it comes to Family Services in Ohio, customer service is dead.

The one upside to share with you is that Aaron had an interview last week that went very well. He was called back the next day (see? some places can call back!) and has a second interview tomorrow. If this goes well, he might be employed as early as mid-September, and insurance would be back in October. And then hopefully I can put this not-quite-nightmare, more-like-a-bad-dream of a summer behind me.



Each Time A Door Closes…

…another one opens, right? And hopefully it is a bigger, better door: prettier, shinier, brighter, more comfortable, makes you happier, pays better, offers more perks.

Oh, that kind of wandered off, didn’t it?

I had planned a cutesy post about a topic that I thought was important today: men’s cologne. And I was all set to write about that until my husband called me around 4:30 pm to tell me he was coming home early today.

Because he lost his job.

Dammit.

I’d like to say this came completely out of the blue, but it didn’t. When he started working for this state agency two years ago, it was a non-political agency. With our new governor (a man who has made me question if he really is a Democrat) in place, he quickly set about putting this agency under his control, allowing him to appoint a leader of the agency.

Shortly after that, people who had worked there before this change of leadership began disappearing. Some transferred or found other jobs, others were encouraged to find employment elsewhere, and for those who remained, many were reassigned to new positions.

Aaron watched as his entire department was torn down, leaving him with the jobs of those who were no longer there, along with his own responsibilities. Despite the additional work, he received no pay raise, since our lovely governor had frozen the pay of most state employees. But at least he still had a job, so we continued on with little complaint.

More people disappeared, though, and this time new people appeared, despite a state hiring freeze. These new people held positions that had never been advertised on the state’s jobs website and collected comfortable salaries. Some didn’t even seem to know how to do parts of their job. Aaron was again given new responsibilities that didn’t suit his skill set, yet also was expected to continue with most of his previous job, too.

But today it all ended. After overloading him to the point that no single person could accomplish all of those tasks in a timely manner, and giving him a useless manager who never responded to his multiple requests to meet and discuss his responsibilities, he was told his services were no longer needed. Pack up your desk, turn in your keycard, and see you again never.

We’re not in a state of panic – yet. Probably because it’s still sinking in. The paychecks will run out in mid-July, and our health insurance is good through the end of July. Then we’ll panic for sure. We’ll have the option of Cobra after that, but there’s no way we can afford it. And last I checked, gas is $4 a gallon and the job market suuuucks.

We’ll get by somehow. We both bring in a little money from writing, and his resume is sitting on several desks already. Aaron has been unhappy with his job for several months, so the job hunt actually started back in March. Hopefully this is some kind of blessing in disguise, and the ideal job will fall into his lap as a result.

Until then, I’ll be reading Megan’s eBay column carefully to learn how to make the best auction listings, and temporarily giving up my search for a Wii Fit. I’ll also try to convince my sweet, devoted husband to not bother getting me a birthday gift this Saturday, because in this case, the thought will be good enough.

This is a big setback, financially, but it’s not the end of the world. At least he won’t be under so much stress from the toxic work environment he had to deal with. Aside from having no income at the moment, things aren’t too bad: we’re healthy, we have supportive friends and family, and we have each other. I’d say that’s still better than what many have.



How Today Is Going (So Far)

1. Waking up at 5:30 am so you can be on TV at 7:45am is tough. Especially when I barely slept all night, because I was going to be on TV at 7:45am.

2. It was right about here that my stomach decided to climb up and lodge itself in my throat:

3. I now understand the difference between my husband with his BFA in Acting, and me with my BA in History. One of us has stage presence – the other likes to read dusty old books and learn about dead people, which does nothing to provide any ability to speak on camera.

4. TV studios are far smaller than you’d think they are. And the people working there are amazing. They’re very nice, and so able to change what they’re doing in a moment’s notice if needed. I could never do their job.

5. Remember David Archuletta on American Idol and the criticism that he closes his eyes too much on camera? Yeah, well, apparently I look at the ground a lot. It’s a good thing I was just on local TV, and not national, like other better-spoken bloggers.

Local TV also has no fancy green room with exotic foods. Still, it worked
fine for practicing deep breathing before going on.

6. I’m glad I was given the chance to promote Being Savvy Columbus with 3 of my 15 minutes of fame.

7. I think people in Columbus now think I make a lot of money from blogging. Ahem… HAHAHAHAHA!!!

8. Hot afternoon days make for fun, wet backyard activities.

9. Later this afternoon, I subjected myself to having 6 suspicious moles removed. It’s probably nothing, but considering I spent most childhood summers looking like I was trying to be the mascot for Red Lobster, skin cancer is always a worry for me.

10. In the doctor’s office, I had a conversation with my doctor that proves that the internet, web content and blogging are topics that can connect us all. (Hi, Dr. H! Welcome to my blog!)

11. Now that I think about it, it’s a good thing I did the live TV interview first and then have six small circles of skin removed from my body, rather than the other way around.

12. I’m nearly positive my youngest daughter is British. She’s been saying hello for several weeks now, except that her version of “hello” is more like “al’lo!” or “el’lo!” Today, as my mom was leaving, she tried to get Mira to say bye-bye, and instead Mira gave her a proper British-sounding “ta-ta!” Next word to teach her: “gov’ner”.

13. Happy birthday, Aaron!

14. I passed all of my nursing school classes this quarter!

15. I just realized that scheduling a TV interview and dermatology surgery on my husband’s birthday probably makes me a bad wife. Especially since I haven’t even signed the card I bought him yet. Of course, I did buy him a card and gift, so that has to count for something, right?

I really didn’t need all of the excitement for the week to happen in just one day.

Today is our first themed haiku day! I know, we should have given you more notice, and we will in the future. But when Jennifer found out about Neil’s plan for this Friday to be “Write Like the Opposite Sex Day,” we both agreed it was perfect. If you want to join in, please do, but don’t feel like you have to. We’re still happy to read haiku about any topic.

I realize my haiku today is the epitome of stereotype. You can blame my husband – I asked him what a guy would write a haiku about, and this is what he gave me. And just think – he’s an artsy-type of guy. Imagine what your average NASCAR-dad would suggest!

Family Time

Thanks to gas prices and a three year old who had spent the week suffering behavior regressions and tantrums, we found ourselves without plans for the entire weekend. Realizing this was a rare opportunity, Aaron and I both (mostly) avoided our computers and spent the entire weekend focused on the girls.

It was relaxing. And fun. And sorely needed. I think Cordy’s behavior last week was a combination of eating something that she had a reaction to, and having her schedule thrown off because Aaron is busy directing a play and hasn’t been home for bedtime most evenings. Whatever the reason, she had a short fuse and while I shouldn’t need to clarify that I love my daughter, I didn’t want to be around her much last week. Everyone was tired, frustrated, and in need of a lot of attention.

So Saturday, Aaron decided to make up for the missed bedtimes by having a daddy-Cordy day. After lunch, they went to a playground for awhile, and then he took her out for ice cream. Just the two of them – no attention-seeking little sister to get in the way.

When they came home, Cordy wanted to play in the backyard, so we gladly took the suggestion, and spent the remainder of the day digging in the sand table, kicking a soccer ball around, and having fun as a family.

Sunday was spent indoors, and not only did we have more family time, we also managed to get some cleaning done. You know I hate cleaning, and I’ll tell you that Aaron might just hate it even more than me. Cordy and Mira also think of toys strewn over the floor as an interior decorating choice, rarely helping to put them away. As a result, you can clearly see the clutter in many of our pictures, doing the equivalent of the drunk guy in the background of a news report waving and making faces.

But now? Did you know we have a floor under all of that clutter?

Next project – finding new rugs to replace the fugly ones my mom insisted we use.

Amazing, isn’t it? A lot of toys were culled from the herd, and the large plastic monstrosities (Jumperoo, etc.) were shipped off to a resale shop, never to be seen in our living room again. We did far more cleaning after that picture, too. We’re not exactly ready for a real-estate showing or anything like that, but it looks good.

After the girls were in bed last night, we found our way back to our internet lives and our multiple jobs. Aaron and I looked at our clean floor, reflecting on the generally positive weekend, and made a vow that we need to do this more often.
