Haiku Friday: Backyard Visitor

Haiku Friday

Early evening
we look out the window to
see a visitor

Out of the woods a
deer jumped our fence to look for
a snack on this side.

Finding the grass was
no greener on our side, she
spied another choice.

I now understand
why the birdseed is going
fast – it’s not the birds!

(Apologies for cloudy photos – I was snapping them behind a screen.)

One of the reasons we bought this house was because of the woods behind it. We love having the deer come by and visit. When we were the second house built, we’d see the deer nearly every day. But now that our entire development is finished, and the one behind us has cut down some of the woods, the deer are finding it harder to survive in this area.

However, every few weeks, I’ll spy one or two poking their heads out of the woods as they move to the east, across a field to a nearby pond. In the coming years that field will be filled with large buildings, and the deer will again be forced from their environment. For now, I’ll enjoy their visits, and let them have as much birdseed as they want.

To play along for Haiku Friday, follow these steps:

1. Write your own haiku on your blog. You can do one or many, all following a theme or just random. What’s a haiku, you ask? Click here.

2. Sign the Mister Linky below with your name and the link to your haiku post (the specific post URL, not your main blog URL). DON’T sign unless you have a haiku this week. If you need help with this, please let me know.

3. Pick up a Haiku Friday button to display on the post or in your sidebar by clicking the button at the top.

REMEMBER: Do not post your link unless you have a haiku this week! I will delete any links without haiku!

  1. You are right to cherish the time you have left with the deer. Only three years ago, there were deer crossing and panther crossing signs on the roads near my home. Now they’ve taken those signs down; they’re no longer necessary. 🙁

    Happy Friday!

  2. Great catch! Those little buggers are FAST!

  3. wow–what great photos–deer are such majestic creatures, even when they are a nuisance. 🙂

  4. That’s so cool! We had some deer in our yard last fall and they’re just so pretty.

  5. Very cool! I miss wildlife so up-close-and-personal … though not their ravenous appetite for our garden goodies.

  6. I love seeing the deer, we have a woods behind our house and the last few years we’ve had all kinds of animals. Probably the coolest was a red fox, but he hasn’t been around in a while!

  7. Oh I so miss that about living where I grew up. We’d often see a deer and her fawn come down to our garden to eat some of my mum’s rose. I think that’s why she planted so many! 😉

  8. Lovely photos! One thing I’ll never find in MY yard is deer but it’s fun to see yours virtually ;–)
    Hugs and blessings,

  9. Ooooh, it’s fun to see wildlife. 🙂
You know, you can buy bags of dried corn (they sell it for squirrels) and lay that on the ground under the bird feeder – she’d probably go for that and you might be able to save more feed for the birdies. 🙂

  10. Love it. That’s what I want.

  11. We live out in the country and deer are FOREVER out in our backyard, which pisses our dogs off to no end! Great haiku!

  12. My first thought was how did that deer get into your backyard since I know it is fenced all the way around. Love the photos-how neat to see the deer out there, did the girls see it? How did they like it?

  13. DE – No, the girls were already asleep by this point, so they didn’t see.

And yeah, the yard is completely fenced in, but it’s only a 4 ft. fence, which is no sweat for a deer to jump.

  14. Freaky! I do think deer are pretty, but have no issues with eating venison… Yum.

    Is that wrong? 🙂

  15. I didn’t even know deer could jump a fence. Lol.

    What a cool visitor!

  16. That’s cool. Even though most of the time I consider deer to be rats on silts. 🙂 We have so many in our area and people leave deer corn for them and they are JUST EVERYWHERE!
