The Toys That Matter

If you’ve ever looked at any of my photos on Flickr that were taken inside my house, you’d know that Cordelia is not suffering for a lack of toys. Many were gifts, some were impulse buys at the store, some were garage sale or consignment store finds. The living room is where most of the toys reside, and I think the toys are slowly taking over the room.

Walking through the living room, it’s hard to not step on a toy if Cordy has been in the room for more than 5 minutes. Her normal routine when coming downstairs is to dig through her toy bin and pull as much as possible out onto the floor. I guess she needs it all in plain sight for inventory or something.

The most dangerous are the Lego blocks and Peek a Blocks. Those things hurt like mad when you step on them. Little People are close behind that, and we have a lot of Little People and Little Animals cluttering the downstairs. Holding one in your hand, you’d think they were soft plastic, but if you step on one, the sole of your foot would disagree with that assessment.

The most offensive are the toys that make noise. These are usually the ones given to us by people who clearly hate us. Late at night, I’ll be picking up toys and putting them back, and one of the noisy toys is sure to scare the hell out of me by going off with no provocation.

Stuffed animals are the most harmless on the surface, but I’m convinced they’re like bunnies – if left alone, they reproduce at high speeds, so that soon every corner of the house is littered with them.

So, with this multitude of toys at her disposal, what is currently holding the mark of honor as Cordy’s favorite toy?

This:

A plastic cup.

All other toys are dead to her now, including Blue. But the plastic cup must go everywhere with her. Even to bed.

This is more weird than the time she stacked Diet Coke cans like blocks.

  1. She’s getting ready for college early 🙂

    Just kidding.

    God. She’s really adorable, C.

  2. No updates yet from Saturday’s HPT? Hmmmmm….

  3. Stuffed animals do multiply like bunnies. LOL

My son was obsessed with carrying around a tampon for a while. Then there was the measuring cup stage. And he was terribly smitten with a dirty key chain for a while too.

  4. That is too funny! Kids just crack me up. I can’t believe that Blue has taken the back seat to a cup!

Squeaks loves a certain wooden spoon of mine. She had a horrible time when she was first learning to crawl because she wouldn’t let go of the spoon!

I wonder…is it only kitchen items?

  5. Those curls just can’t be natural…:) She’s a cutie!

Last night I put all of the toys in the living room into one of FOUR toy bins we have in there to accommodate all of them. When I returned from a trip to empty the diapers they were ALL back out again – I think it is an inventory thing.

And mega blocks are the worst.

  6. I just can’t figure out if it’s weirder because it’s actually one of two plastic cups (that one and the yellow one), or if the fact that there are two make it less weird.

  7. I think she wants you to pour the Diet Coke into the cup.

  8. 🙂 At least she’s got something that’s not embarrassing!

  9. ah yes… the plastic cup. infinite source of entertainment, and also holds a place of honour in bumblebee’s toy box.
    seriously, why do we bother?!

and that picture! c-u-t-e! are those curls real? ;p

  10. I hear ya…I have a post on OG’s blog back earlier in the year about OG having so may fabulous toys…but all she wants to play with is BOXES & plastic utensils

  11. so that’s how you get them to sleep! I need to go out and get a blue plastic cup, stat!

Btw, your living room looks like my living room. oh and, nice toddler perm! (She is so very cute!!!!)

  12. Emmie has a cup in her crib, too. We also love the cardboard roll that the toilet paper comes on, and brooms.

    Yes, brooms.

  13. Too funny. That brings back memories of all the time and energy I spent (not to mention money) finding and buying toys for the Shalebug. All in a desperate hope to help with his development.

You know what hundreds of dollars and hours later produced? A love affair with a shiny silver teaspoon. He took it every where.

So I sent it with him when he grew his angel wings.

  14. Ha ha! I love that. My kiddos often form attachments to what I like to call found toys. We have some of the oddest things in our toy bins.

  15. The Flip Flop Mamma! says

I talked about the Little People on my blog today too!! How funny!!

Well, for about 2 days, my baby had to hold the ear thermometer!! She had to sleep with it and play with it!! LOL! I’m glad she finally forgot about it!

  16. This is all too familiar! I actually had the nerve to move all of Dawson’s toys and the toy bin to his bedroom. He was mad at me. And he kept dragging things from his room to the living room. We now make him put things back and he’s getting better at not taking out so much!

He never really had a favorite toy, though. That Cordy is so cute with her new fave plastic cup!

  17. Mommy off the Record says

That is SO funny that she takes the cup to bed with her. How adorable!

Little Guy doesn’t have anything like that…unless you count his thumb.

  18. This is so true, especially about the toys that make noise. Elmo has ruined “Shout” for me forever. And yeah, Tupperware? Best gift you could get the girls…

  19. I’m glad we aren’t the only ones who keep most of our toys in the living room!
